The indictment against those involved in the conspiracy was unsealed in 2019 at the same time they were fighting a Superior Court lawsuit filed by 22 women. The judge in that case found in favor of the women and handed down a $12.7 million judgment against Pratt, Wolfe, adult performer Ruben Andre Garcia and various business interests connected to Pratt. Most were told the video production would take around 30 minutes, when in reality, they typically lasted for several hours.

In fact, the disparateness of our perspectives on and experiences of sex and porn, alongside the fact we mostly assume ourselves to be the norm, is something I was routinely reminded of while reading Porn. She does not annotate the interviews, and one of her skills as an interviewer is that she does not moralize at her subjects and avoids steering their answers. But Porn has the quality of a good novel, in that while reading it you often notice small details or perspectives which make you think about the world, or your own life, differently, without having a lesson overtly spelled out to you. It struck me while reading the above conversations, for example, that theoretically open, progressive public discourse around porn can have almost the same silencing effect as no discourse at all. In the sense that, when a consensus emerges on the progressive perspective to hold on a certain aesthetic of porn, it will change the way we speak and what we admit to, but perhaps not how we feel. I found myself wondering too if this kind of progressive consensus can have negative outcomes as well as positive ones.

It reminded me most of Nell Dunn’s brilliant Talking to Women, which consists of the transcripts of conversations conducted between Dunn, a playwright and novelist living in London, and each of nine of her female friends in 1964. In these conversations, mostly conducted over a bottle of wine, Dunn and her friends, a mixture of artists, writers, and factory workers from varying class backgrounds, discuss their lives as women living through a time of major societal change. Reading Porn is a reminder that, in the internet age, we are living through a major societal change too.

As a part of the conspiracy, Garcia and others would at times coerce victims into completing the videos once they were underway. Garcia and other co-conspirators threatened to sue the victims, cancel flights home, and post the videos online, if the victims did not complete the sex videos. Hotel room doors were at times blocked by camera and recording equipment, and the victims felt powerless and unable to leave. Pratt is charged with multiple counts of conspiracy and sex trafficking, as well as one count of producing child pornography in connection with the scheme, from which he and his team made millions, court records show. Changes in hormones, emotional factors, and relationship dynamics can all make you want to have more sex.

«I’m going to kill myself if this stays up here. I was scammed and told this was only going to be on DVDs in another country. Carney wrote in the order, using the acronym for child sexual abuse material.

Most recently, she said, she reported to state authorities the Pornhub video showing a woman shouting in pain and asking not to be filmed. Mickelwait said that she has reported many hundreds of videos to law enforcement and anti-trafficking watchdogs. Pornhub, Aylo, and Ethical Capital Partners are aggressively fighting these lawsuits, some of which are nearly four years old. The companies deny knowingly profiting from illegal and abusive content and insist that reforms now keep such content off the site. In a nod to the scope of this litigation tsunami, a federal judge in California used the phrase «tens of thousands of children» in a November order granting class certification to one of at least two class-action trafficking suits against Pornhub and MindGeek, which rebranded last year as Aylo. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to his arrest. Michael James Pratt, who fled the United States during a San Diego civil trial and was subsequently charged criminally, made his initial appearance in a San Diego federal courtroom Tuesday afternoon.
